Obviously the Nam Arsenal comes from Woolwich Arsenal - their original name - but yes no such place either!

Are they the only 2 clubs not named after a place?

Oh hang on Crystal Palace just sprung to mind.. so thats 3...

Re: Port Vale
This is actually a true story. In Dec 1990, I went to see what I thought was Port Vale at home to West Ham, but actually it was the reverse fixture at the Boleyn Ground! On Boxing Day 1990 we had played at home and I was spending a few days after Christmas with the in-laws in Hereford (about 100 miles from Stoke). I knew we were playing Port Vale a couple of days or so later and just assumed it was an away fixture. So anyway, my father in law (who was an Arsenal fan) and I drove up the M6 to Stoke on Trent to watch West Ham. There were quite a few cars with claret and blue scarves draped from the windows, so we thought we were in good company. Anyway, we arrived at the ground at about 2pm and it was completely deserted. I had even asked a local near the ground how to get there and he said, “I don’t know why you’d want to go there”. I assumed he must have been a Stoke City fan! Maybe it had been postponed, I thought? No, the weather wasn’t bad. It was only then that I looked in the newspaper and saw staring at me ‘West Ham v Port Vale’. Never has the expression, “Oh shit!” been more appropriate.
Fortunately the 200 mile round trip wasn’t wasted as Stoke City were at home to Huddersfield that afternoon, so we went to the Victoria Ground for that.
My father in law never let me forget that incident till his dying day. Finally, the ‘West Ham’ fans we were waving to on the motorway? They were actually Aston Villa fans going to their game at Old Trafford!

Re: Port Vale
Used to have one of the biggest (the biggest?) club grounds in the country, nicknamed the "Wembley of the North" (oddly, as Stoke is North Midlands, not North proper).

I was at the 2-2 draw in the seats only realised the were standing below us when they all jumped about when they scored otherwise I would have been chucking stuff down on them earlier ( I wouldn't)

I also just drove past their ground. Stoke is an unmitigated khazi. In fact, Tunstall (the ground is Tunstall/Burslem border, I think) is the least bad of the six towns and that looks like Gaza on a clearing up day.

The club's name comes from a big old house that was there, if I recall correctly.

I just drove past their ground. It's in Burslem Stoke. There is no place called Port Vale. So why is it called Port Vale?
